Does SafetyWing cover scooters and motorbikes?
Before renting a scooter—or getting on the back of one—check the engine size, your policy version and the cover you actually selected.
The short answer
SafetyWing’s current Essential guidance requires the Adventure Sports add-on for riders and passengers on scooters or motorcycles over 50cc. A policy purchase by itself is not enough to establish cover for the ride.

The over-50cc rule applies to passengers too
Under SafetyWing’s scooter, moped and motorbike conditions, the Adventure Sports add-on is needed for accident or injury eligibility when riding or travelling as a passenger on a vehicle larger than 50cc. Proper licensing for the vehicle class and appropriate safety equipment are also conditions. Intoxicated driving and racing are excluded.
Do not judge engine size from the word “scooter” or how small the vehicle looks. Ask for the actual model and engine capacity before deciding whether the insurance you have matches the ride. Save that information with the rental agreement.
Being a passenger does not remove the add-on requirement. A short lift to a café, a hired driver on a longer route and a day spent riding your own rental all deserve a check against the policy. If any detail is unclear, use another transport option while you confirm it.
Three different costs people call scooter insurance
| Possible cost | Check it with |
|---|---|
| Your own eligible medical treatment | Your travel medical insurer and the relevant benefit |
| Damage to the rental scooter | The rental agreement and any vehicle damage protection |
| Injury to someone else or damage to their property | The applicable motor liability cover and local requirements |
Essential’s scooter guidance excludes personal liability, vehicle/property damage and third-party medical expenses from this benefit. Medical protection for you does not make a rental damage deposit refundable or pay every bill from a road accident. See scooter, moped and motorbike conditions.
At the rental desk, ask separately about the damage excess, theft, tyres, lost keys and third-party liability. Photograph the agreement and any protection certificate. A verbal “insurance included” is not a clear answer unless you know which of these costs it refers to.
This distinction also helps compare transport costs honestly. Add the rental price, fuel, required protection and remaining financial exposure before deciding that a scooter is cheaper than a taxi or other option.
Choose the add-on before buying
SafetyWing’s Adventure Sports add-on says the add-on is selected at purchase and cannot simply be added to an active plan. It also has its own limit and exclusions. If you already have Essential, ask support what changing cover would mean before cancelling and replacing the plan; changing contracts can affect how existing conditions are treated.
Payment choice matters too: the current payment options and plan duration says Adventure Sports is unavailable on the fixed-date option. Check the selected option at checkout, rather than assuming every quote can take the same extras.
Use your whole itinerary when choosing. A traveller who spends the first week walking around a city and then hires a scooter still needs to think about that second week before purchasing. Make the decision from the activities you intend to do, not only the first few days.
Licence, helmet and destination checks
Insurance conditions and permission to drive are separate questions. Check the destination’s official licensing requirements for the vehicle class, and whether you need an international driving permit alongside your licence. A rental business handing you the keys does not establish that your documents are sufficient.
Ask the insurer about the exact documents you hold and the vehicle you plan to ride. Avoid relying on another traveller’s experience with a different licence, country or policy version. Keep copies available, while carrying originals when local rules require them.
For protective equipment, check fit and condition before accepting the vehicle. If you are not comfortable with the vehicle or traffic, choose a different way to get around. An insurance purchase does not make an unfamiliar ride manageable.
Use our destination guides for the rest of the planning: Bali insurance considerations, Thailand insurance considerations and Vietnam insurance considerations. Recheck local requirements with official authorities for your travel dates.
The message to send before you book
I am travelling in [country] and considering a [model and engine capacity] scooter as a [driver/passenger]. My plan is [name/version] with [selected add-ons]. I hold [licence class and permit]. Can you point me to the conditions that apply to this ride, including exclusions and the relevant medical limit?
This gives support something specific to answer. Keep the response with your plan documents, and separately ask the rental operator about damage and third-party cover. Do not substitute an informal chat for the contract, but use it to resolve unclear wording before you commit.
At pickup, make one final comparison: actual engine size, named rider, documents, safety equipment and purchased add-ons. If the supplied vehicle differs from the one you planned, check again. An “or similar” replacement can change the question you need answered.
For a ride you have already taken or an incident that has already occurred, give the insurer the real timeline. Buying an add-on afterwards should not be treated as a way to insure the past.
Common questions
Does being a passenger avoid the over-50cc rule?
No. The current Essential help guidance includes passengers in the Adventure Sports requirement for vehicles over 50cc.
Does this cover damage to the rental scooter?
Do not treat the travel medical benefit as rental vehicle damage or motor liability insurance. Check those arrangements separately.
Can I add Adventure Sports halfway through my existing plan?
The current add-on guidance says it cannot simply be added to an active plan. Ask support about your options and the consequences before cancelling or replacing any cover.
