Travel insurance for a one-way trip
You can leave room for the route to change while still making a clear plan for insurance dates, payments and the journey home.
The short answer
SafetyWing says you do not need booked travel tickets to purchase Essential. An open-ended trip still needs a valid start date, eligible destinations and a plan for keeping cover active.

No return ticket does not mean no planning
SafetyWing’s buying without a return ticket confirms that booked travel tickets are not required to buy Essential. That answers the insurance purchase question. It does not establish that an airline or destination will let you board or enter without onward-travel evidence: check those requirements separately for the route and passport you will use.
Start with the part of the trip you do know. Note your departure date, first destination, likely next country and whether you expect to visit home. You can leave later accommodation flexible without leaving the insurance start date to chance.
For example, a traveller planning a few weeks in Thailand followed by an undecided stay elsewhere should record both the confirmed leg and the likely next stops. The insurance check then becomes “will this cover the routes I am considering?” rather than “does it say worldwide?”
Check the route, including stops in the US
Essential covers many destinations but has exclusions, and US cover requires the relevant add-on where available. US citizens and residents cannot buy that US add-on. SafetyWing also notes that travel warnings can affect benefits. Check covered destinations and US add-on against your actual route before adding a stop.
Keep a route note with four columns: country, expected arrival, expected departure and anything the insurer needs to confirm. Add a line for a possible home visit. A broad geographic label on a product page should not replace that check.
If your plans change while abroad, review the new destination before booking non-refundable transport. This also gives you a natural moment to check visas, onward travel and the activities you intend to do there. Avoid assuming that insurance purchase alone answers any of those other questions.
Keep cover active when the trip gets longer
If you need to extend an existing Essential plan, SafetyWing’s extending an active plan says to request it while the plan is active. Extensions must add at least five days and stay within the plan’s maximum total length of 364 days. An extension request is not the same as a saved confirmation of new coverage dates.
Put a reminder before the end of the period shown in your account. At that point, decide whether you are continuing the same plan, requesting an extension or ending travel. Leave time for questions instead of making the end of the contract coincide with a long flight or an overnight border crossing.
If you are using recurring payments, keep the payment method valid and read the confirmation for each new period. If the card expires or a payment fails, check the account status promptly. Do not use a standing bank payment or a calendar reminder as proof that insurance remains active.

Budget in days, not vague months
| Budget line | What to record |
|---|---|
| Insurance period | The actual start and end dates, or renewal cycle |
| Base quote | Price, currency and the period it buys |
| Extras | Activities, destinations and other selected add-ons |
| Payment schedule | When money leaves the account |
| Exit plan | How you stop renewal or request a date change |
A four-week price covers 28 days. Thirteen such periods make 364 days; twelve make 336. This is an easy budgeting error on a long trip. Use the quoted billing period when multiplying costs, and allow separately for foreign-exchange or card charges if they apply to the payment method.
Keep a buffer for other trip costs too. A refundable hotel booking, transport change or short stay at home may change the shape of your budget. Compare the total arrangement that fits your plans rather than looking for the smallest number on the first checkout screen.

A visit home needs a separate check
Essential’s visits to your home country describes limited emergency cover for qualifying short visits. The plan must have been active for at least 90 days before that benefit can be used, and the visit must begin from abroad after the insurance starts. Permitted durations vary by payment structure and home country; returning home to end your travels is treated differently.
Before buying flights home, ask how the specific visit fits your active plan. Save both travel dates and the insurer’s explanation. Do not assume that keeping a subscription running creates ordinary healthcare coverage at home.
If you expect to divide the year between countries, write out that pattern at the start. It may change the type of insurance worth comparing, not merely the number of days you purchase.
Finish the trip without accidental renewals
SafetyWing’s cancellation and refunds distinguishes stopping the next recurring cycle from asking for mid-cycle cancellation and a possible refund. Refunds after a plan starts are conditional; do not budget on automatically recovering every unused day.
When your return becomes definite, check the current renewal date, choose the appropriate ending process and save the resulting confirmation. If you need a different final date, ask support before taking action. Keep the documents for the trip after the contract ends in case you need them for a claim.
At purchase, the useful question is not “Can this last forever?” It is “What happens at the end of the next period, if I extend, change route or go home?” A clear answer makes an open-ended journey much easier to manage.
Common questions
Do I need a return ticket to buy SafetyWing Essential?
SafetyWing says booked travel tickets are not required for purchase. Airline and immigration requirements remain separate checks.
Can I request an extension after the plan has expired?
The published extension process is for active plans. Contact the insurer before expiry; do not assume a lapsed plan can be extended retrospectively.
Does an open-ended trip mean unlimited policy duration?
No. Your contract still has defined dates and duration rules. Check the next expiry or renewal and the procedure for continuing before it arrives.
