Start with Chania or Heraklion?
Put your first and last accommodation on the map before comparing rentals. For a western-Crete stay centred on Chania, check Chania Airport collection. For a trip centred on Heraklion or continuing east, start with Heraklion Airport. Rethymno can fit different routes, so compare the actual journeys from both airports.
Flight prices still matter, but add the cost and time of repositioning. A small saving on a flight can disappear if it creates an extra long transfer or an unwanted hotel night.
| Your route | Quote to compare |
|---|---|
| Mostly western Crete | Chania pickup and return, alongside your flight options. |
| Heraklion and eastern stops | Heraklion pickup and return. |
| A west-to-east trip | Different collection and return locations, including any one-way charge. |
| Arrival or departure by ferry | The actual port meeting point; an airport booking is a different location. |
Airport desks, nearby offices and ferry ports
Chania Airport publishes a directory of rental operators. Your selected offer should still explain where you meet that supplier and whether a transfer is involved. Save the company name, office hours and the number to use if your arrival changes.
If you arrive by ferry, check that the offer specifically includes port collection. Do not enter an airport simply because it is in the same city. For an arrival by air and departure by sea, price the correct pair of locations and compare it with returning at the original branch plus a transfer.
How many days should you hire for?
If your first days are spent exploring one town, compare collecting after those days with hiring immediately on arrival. If you are changing bases and carrying luggage, continuous hire may simplify the route.
For a shorter holiday, choose a region and explore it properly. For a wider trip, moving your base can reduce repeated driving. Our existing Crete itinerary offers route lengths to work from; use the actual hotel addresses to check that a proposed day remains comfortable.
Keep a beach or countryside outing separate from a major cross-island transfer when that would otherwise leave very little time at either end. A hire car adds flexibility, but it does not make every point on the map a convenient day trip.

Choose the vehicle and permitted roads together
A compact car can be easier to place in a small parking space, provided it fits everyone’s bags. If you prefer automatic, select it explicitly. The category and transmission matter more than an example model that may be supplied as “or similar.”
For remote beaches, inspect the final access road before setting off and check the contract’s unsealed-road restrictions. Ask about the exact beach route you intend to use, including Balos if it is on your list. Booking an SUV does not itself grant permission to use every track.
If a route or parking situation is unsuitable, compare a boat, organised excursion or a different stop instead of forcing the rental into that plan. Check current local access information before relying on an old itinerary.
One-way and ferry permissions
For a Chania-to-Heraklion trip, enter different return details in the search and review the full quote. Confirm the handover location, opening hours and any separate charge before booking. Do not assume a supplier can collect from any hotel or port.
If you want to take the car to another island, obtain the supplier’s specific permission and check how the rental conditions apply. A ferry ticket and permission to transport a rented vehicle are separate arrangements. Often it is simpler to price separate rentals for separate islands.
Compare the whole booking cost
Use the same dates, times, currency and driver details for every quote. Add the rental, selected protection, any extra driver or child seat, expected fuel, parking and location fees. Keep a refundable deposit separate from the trip cost, while checking that the required funds are available.
DiscoverCars states that its Full Coverage does not by itself remove the supplier’s deposit requirement. Read the current terms and the rental conditions attached to your selected offer.
Check the cancellation deadline and how any refund is provided before treating a booking as flexible. A starting price for different dates or a smaller vehicle is not a useful comparison. Open the offer for your real trip to see the applicable total.
Save this collection checklist
- Required original licence, any accepted permit or translation, identification and payment card.
- Supplier name, precise meeting point, opening hours and delay contact.
- Deposit, fuel or charging policy, mileage allowance and permitted route.
- Condition photos and acknowledgement of existing damage before departure.
- Return address, time, procedure and transport back to your onward departure.
