Greece Ferry Guide: Ports, Island Routes & Booking Checklist
Choose the right Athens port, compare the complete journey and book each island leg separately. Practical ferry planning for Santorini, Mykonos, Naxos and Paros, with a connection checklist and direct route searches.
Quick verdict
Choose your ferry by its departure port, arrival time and seat type, then compare the full cost including transfers. An “Athens” search may show different ports. Book the return leg that protects your flight first; fit the island hops around it. If you arrive by air, compare the airport-to-port connection with the sailing time before choosing Rafina or Piraeus.
Book early
- The last island-to-Athens leg before your flight
- A sailing tied to a fixed hotel booking
- A vehicle, cabin or reserved seat you need
Can stay flexible
- Dates with more than one suitable sailing actually available
- An itinerary with spare days for a changed departure
- A short hop after checking the next available alternative

Which Athens port: Piraeus, Rafina, or Lavrio
Compare the whole journey: airport or hotel → departure port → ferry → island accommodation. A shorter crossing can lose its advantage if it adds a difficult transfer.
Piraeus
Useful when your chosen island service departs here or you are staying in Athens. From the airport, Metro Line 3 runs directly to Piraeus; the airport estimates about 60 minutes. Allow extra time to reach the ship from the station.
Rafina
Compare Rafina when an available sailing suits your route. The airport lists a regional KTEL bus connection. Match the actual bus or taxi journey to boarding time; a taxi estimate is not a guaranteed connection.
Lavrio
Use Lavrio when it is the port on your ticket. The airport describes a bus connection via Markopoulo with limited daytime service; plan the transfer before paying for the ferry.
Choose the port before the ticket
Write the full port name into your plan. Compare transfer cost, waiting time, boarding cutoff and island arrival time for each option. “Athens to Mykonos” alone is not enough information to arrange your transfer.
Blue Star vs SeaJets: the real trade-off
Compare the actual vessel and accommodation offered on your departure. An operator name alone does not tell you whether a ticket includes a reserved seat, cabin, vehicle space or outdoor access.
Conventional sailing
- Compare the scheduled crossing with your arrival plans
- Check deck, numbered-seat and cabin options separately
- A deck ticket does not reserve a numbered seat
- Confirm vehicle space if taking a car
High-speed sailing
- Compare the time saved against the total ticket and transfer cost
- Check the vessel and seating before booking
- Keep a delay buffer even on a shorter scheduled crossing
- Read the fare’s change and cancellation conditions
Pay for what improves your trip
A reserved seat can be worth the extra cost on a long crossing. A faster ferry can be worth it when it gives you more time on the island. Neither makes a tight onward flight connection reliable.
Piraeus to Santorini
Piraeus → Santorini (Athinios port)
Plan the port transfer tooCheck the named Santorini arrival port and arrange the onward trip to your accommodation. Compare the scheduled arrival with local transport and hotel check-in, especially on a late sailing.
Athens to Mykonos
Athens → Mykonos
Compare the full journeySearch Piraeus and Rafina for your date, then add the transfer from your airport or hotel to each quote. Compare the named arrival port on Mykonos with the trip to your accommodation. Choose the option that leaves enough time to board, rather than assuming the shortest crossing wins.
Athens to Naxos and Paros
Piraeus → Naxos and Paros
Choose your first islandNaxos or Paros can work as an early stop in a Cyclades route. Check both your arrival sailing and the next island leg before booking accommodation. A route that appears convenient on a map may have a different timetable on your travel date.

What to book first
Five details to write down before paying
- Exact ports: departure and arrival port names, not just “Athens” and the island.
- Door-to-door times: when your transfer starts, the required boarding time, scheduled arrival and onward transfer.
- All-in quote: passenger fare, seat or cabin, vehicle if needed, booking fees and both port transfers.
- Separate legs: one booking for every crossing where you plan to leave the boat and stay overnight.
- Fallback: the next suitable sailing and whether your hotel or flight can absorb a delay. For a flight you cannot miss, consider returning to Athens the previous day.
For example, compare an earlier conventional ferry plus a numbered seat with a later high-speed ferry plus its transfers. Choose on usable island time and connection risk, not just the advertised crossing length.
Book in damage order: if missing a sailing would derail accommodation, a connection, or a flight home — that’s the leg to lock first.
| Priority | What it looks like | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Book now | Any sailing tied to a fixed flight date or accommodation booking. | Compare available alternatives before locking in the rest of the itinerary. |
| Book next | Marquee inter-island hops (e.g. Mykonos→Santorini in July) | Book the departure that matches your hotel dates and gives you a workable arrival time. |
| Can wait | Short hops on high-frequency routes (Mykonos→Paros, Naxos→Paros) | Flexibility depends on available departures for your exact day, not a summer average. |

Route logic for the Greek islands
One week? Two islands max
Athens + one island done properly, or two islands with a day each, beats a four-island sprint where half the trip is ports, check-ins, and lugging bags in 38°C heat. Greece rewards slowing down.
Build outward from Naxos or Paros, not Santorini
Santorini is spectacular, but it’s often the worst first island — expensive, crowded, and a longer ferry from Athens. Starting at Naxos or Paros and finishing at Santorini gives you a better island-hopping structure and cheaper nights at the start.
Compare flights for distant islands
For a long or awkward island connection, compare flying with the full ferry journey, including transfers. Choose using your actual date, baggage needs and total price.
Solve the last transport day first
If the final day before your flight involves a ferry + port transfer + airport, figure that out before you plan the rest. Allow for a late ferry as well as the port-to-airport transfer and airline check-in.
Check-in, timing, and weather rules
| Rule | Operator guidance | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Online check-in | Blue Star and SeaJets: opens 48hr before, closes 2hr before departure | Do it the night before, not in the taxi. |
| Gate numbers at Piraeus | Use the gate named on your current ticket and check the port screens on arrival | Allow time to find your gate — Piraeus is a large port. |
| Luggage allowance | Blue Star lists up to 50kg or 1m³; check other operators separately | Generous, but port transit with heavy bags in summer heat is its own problem. |
| Weather cancellations | Blue Star explicitly states delays or cancellations can happen due to weather, port authority orders, or force majeure | This is a normal part of Greek island travel. Build buffers. Don’t book same-day ferry-to-flight connections. |
| Phone number on booking | Add a reachable mobile number for operator notifications | Use a reachable number. Keep data working on the day — a Greece eSIM helps. |
Mistakes to avoid
- Booking before choosing the port. Compare the actual transfer and sailing together; neither Piraeus nor Rafina is automatically best for every airport arrival.
- Booking the slowest ferry when you need the fast one, or vice versa. Blue Star and SeaJets are different products — choose based on what you actually need on that day.
- Fitting three islands into five days. You’ll spend more time at ports than on islands.
- Ignoring the onward connection. Allow for a delay, the transfer to the airport and airline check-in; an overnight in Athens can reduce the risk before an important flight.
- Skipping online check-in until the port. The window closes 2 hours before departure and queues at port check-in are long in peak season.
- Not verifying the Piraeus gate assignment. Gates change. Always confirm on the day using your ticket and the port screens.
A connection buffer includes more than the crossing
A scheduled arrival time is only the start of a flight connection. Add time to disembark, reach the transfer, travel to the airport and meet airline check-in. Then consider a ferry delay. If one changed sailing would make you miss the flight, return to Athens earlier or stay overnight.
What to sort before ferry day
Greece ferry days run better when everything else is already handled. Data, money, and port logistics sorted before you’re navigating Piraeus in the heat.

Book Greece ferry tickets
Use Ferryscanner to compare operators and times on each route. For Greece in summer, checking multiple operators matters — Blue Star, SeaJets, and Golden Star can have different availability on the same departure day.
Ready to lock in the route?
Book the Athens-to-island legs once your dates are set, then leave the smaller hops flexible. Route quality beats island count every time.
Frequently asked questions
How long is the ferry from Athens to Santorini?
Compare the scheduled duration for the exact date, vessel and stops. Add both port transfers before deciding whether a faster crossing is worth the extra cost.
Should I use Piraeus or Rafina?
Use the port on the sailing that fits your full journey. Piraeus has a direct airport Metro Line 3 connection; Rafina has a regional bus connection. Compare transfer time, boarding cutoff and arrival time together.
What is the difference between a deck ticket and a numbered seat?
A deck ticket does not reserve a numbered seat. If you want an assigned seat or cabin, select that accommodation in the quote and compare the extra cost.
How early should I arrive at the port?
Blue Star requires passengers and vehicles at the embarkation area at least one hour before departure. Follow the current instructions for your operator and ticket, and allow time to reach the ship.
Can I book a same-day ferry then flight?
It depends on the whole connection and the risk you can accept. Include disembarkation, transfer and airline check-in, plus a possible ferry delay. Consider returning to Athens the previous day before a flight you cannot miss.
Can I stop on an island and continue on the same ticket?
Do not assume a through ticket allows an overnight stop. Book each separate crossing and date when planning an island stay, and check change conditions before paying.
