There is no universal winner across every country and data size. These are the differences worth checking before spending money; claims that one app is always fastest or cheapest do not tell you what will work for your trip.
Saily
A place to start for a straightforward holiday plan. Saily sells local and regional data plans and advertises automatic activation at your destination. That can make arrival simpler once you have installed the eSIM.
Choose your destination first, then compare the bundle size and validity. Its worldwide catalogue does not mean one local plan covers every country.
Airalo
Worth comparing if you already use Airalo or are crossing borders. It offers local, regional and global plans, including unlimited options. Look at the plan’s included countries before assuming it fits a multi-stop trip.
Compare the same data amount and validity as the alternative. A low starting price may describe a much smaller or shorter plan.
Yesim
Add it to your shortlist for a large data allowance. Yesim offers fixed-data and unlimited options. Compare the price for your whole stay, especially if the listing leads with a daily rate.
For laptop sharing or video, read the selected plan’s hotspot and high-speed conditions. “Unlimited” alone does not tell you how fast a long work session will be.
Choose the plan before choosing the brand
Use these five checks to narrow the options. They matter more than an overall star rating for a provider.

A simple price comparison
Suppose a ten-day trip has an illustrative choice of a $12 plan valid for seven days or an $18 plan valid for 30 days, both with enough data. The $12 option is not automatically cheaper: include the extra plan or top-up needed for the remaining days. These are example prices, not live offers.
For two people sharing a connection, add both people’s likely usage. Also consider whether you will split up: a second eSIM may be more practical than depending on one hotspot all day.
Set it up before you fly
- Check the exact device model. Use the provider’s compatibility list and confirm the phone is carrier-unlocked. Regional versions of the same phone can differ.
- Install on reliable Wi-Fi. Follow the selected plan’s installation instructions and keep them accessible offline.
- Label both lines. Give the travel eSIM a clear name so you can select it for mobile data.
- Check home-SIM settings. Disable its data roaming and automatic data switching if you want to avoid using home-network data abroad. Calls and texts may still have charges.
- Follow the activation instructions on arrival. Select the travel line for data and enable roaming for that line when the provider instructs you to.
Download an offline map and save your accommodation address before departure. If the eSIM does not connect, check the selected data line, activation state and roaming setting before deleting anything; contact the provider if the problem persists.

How much data should I buy?
Start with your recent usage rather than a fixed allowance for everyone. Someone using maps and messages has different needs from someone uploading video or working through a hotspot. Check whether a top-up is available before starting with a small bundle.
Will I keep my normal number?
You can normally keep your home SIM installed while using a travel eSIM for data. Whether calls, SMS or a local number are included depends on the plan. Check home-carrier charges before using your usual line abroad.
Is a regional plan better value?
Sometimes. Compare the total cost, included countries and validity with separate local plans. A cheap regional plan that excludes one of your stops still leaves you needing another connection.
Does unlimited mean unrestricted high-speed data?
Do not assume that. Look for the high-speed allowance, any reduced speed after it is used, and the hotspot policy in the selected plan’s terms.
