Which China eSIM would I start with?

How much eSIM data should you buy?
Choose a daily allowance and add a buffer for travel days. These are planning assumptions, not measured averages or a guarantee of what your apps will use.
Calculation: days × selected GB/day × 1.2, rounded up to a whole GB. The extra 20% is a planning buffer. Video calls, streaming and cloud backups can exceed these budgets quickly. Check your phone’s recent mobile-data usage for a better personal estimate.

All estimates include the same 20% buffer. Match both allowance and validity: a cheap seven-day plan cannot cover a fourteen-day trip by itself.
China eSIMs, app access and VPN claims
A mobile-data connection and access to a particular online service are different things. Check the provider’s current mainland-China guidance, especially if you need a company VPN, a specific messaging service or a work login.
Saily says a VPN is not required to use its China eSIM. Its virtual-location documentation describes routing traffic through a remote server to change the apparent location. That does not establish that you are buying a separate NordVPN subscription, or that the feature covers your hotel Wi-Fi connection.
Prepare for the connection you will actually use
Save hotel addresses, booking references, installation instructions and a contact method offline before departure. Test essential apps on mobile data after arrival. Switching to hotel or café Wi-Fi changes the connection, so success on your eSIM does not demonstrate that those apps will also work on Wi-Fi.
If a work service is essential, check with its administrator and the eSIM provider before relying on it. Treat a second connection as a contingency to investigate, not a guaranteed fix for every app-access problem.
Does a China eSIM cover Hong Kong and Macau?
Saily’s mainland-China plan does not include Hong Kong or Macau. The provider lists them separately. For a route such as Hong Kong → Shenzhen → Shanghai, compare separate destination plans with a regional package that explicitly includes every stop.
Yesim’s China page lists one-country coverage. Do not interpret a country label or an international brand name as regional coverage. Read the covered-destinations list on the exact package before checkout.
What about a local number and hotspot?
Do not buy a data plan expecting a mainland Chinese number. An internet connection for messaging apps, a virtual number and a local mobile number serve different purposes. Saily offers a separate US-number service; it is not a Chinese number.
Saily lists hotspot support and Yesim lists hotspot as available. Both still require you to choose a suitable allowance. For laptop work, budget for meeting video, uploads and background updates, and read the package’s high-speed and fair-use rules.
Compare the cost of your whole trip
The lowest advertised starting price usually belongs to a small or short-lived package. For a useful comparison, open the same destination, currency, trip length and approximate allowance at each provider. Include any extra package you would need after the first expires.
- Check the exact phone model. Confirm eSIM support for the device’s region of sale and that it is network-unlocked. A model-family name alone is not enough.
- Check when validity starts. Installation and plan activation are different steps. Read the selected package’s instructions before installing it.
- Check hotspot and speed rules. An unlimited label does not promise unlimited high-speed tethering. Read the daily allowance, reduced speed and reset period.
- Check top-ups and renewal. Find out whether you can add data to this package, need a replacement package, or have selected a subscription. Keep automatic renewal off unless you want it.
- Check the final total. Compare the amount you will actually pay, in the same currency, for the whole trip. A coupon is useful only if you meet its conditions.
If you already use one of these apps and its suitable plan is competitively priced, staying with it may be easier than opening another account to save a small amount.
Set up before departure; connect on arrival
- Use reliable Wi-Fi to buy your plan and save the order confirmation, installation instructions and support contact somewhere you can access offline.
- Follow the package’s installation timing. If advance installation is supported, label the new line “Travel data” so you can distinguish it from your home SIM.
- On arrival, choose the travel eSIM for mobile data and enable roaming on that line if instructed. Disable mobile-data roaming on your home line, and turn off automatic mobile-data switching if it could select the home SIM.
- Load a small webpage and your essential travel apps before leaving the airport or hotel. If something fails, check the plan has started, the correct data line is selected and the provider’s APN instructions are followed.
- Do not delete an installed eSIM as your first troubleshooting step. Reinstallation rules vary; contact the provider before removing it.
Using a travel eSIM for data does not remove your home provider’s charges for calls, texts or other roaming services. Keeping your home number available and choosing which line provides data are separate decisions.
