Terminal desk, shuttle or meeting point?

The airport’s car-rental directory lists different collection arrangements, including desks in arrivals and companies collecting passengers for an outside office. Search results labelled “airport” therefore need a second check.

For each quote, open the pickup information and identify the supplier, meeting point, contact number and office hours. If a driver meets you, establish how to find them and what to do if baggage is delayed. If a shuttle is used, ask how it works for your arrival and return time.

Do not choose solely on distance from the terminal. A clearly explained transfer with suitable hours can be easier than an ambiguous handover. Conversely, after an overnight flight, a convenient collection may justify a price difference. Compare the actual procedure.

Save the return address before leaving the office. Airport departures, the rental office and the vehicle inspection area may be different pins. Include the transfer to the terminal in your flight-day timing and confirm any out-of-hours arrangement in advance.

2WD or 4WD: let the route decide

For a route using suitable open paved roads in favourable conditions, start by comparing a normal car with the space you need. Do not pay for a 4WD solely because an itinerary contains the word “Iceland”. Equally, do not choose the cheapest 2WD before checking every planned road and the supplier’s permissions.

SafeTravel’s highland guidance says that not all 4WD vehicles suit all F-roads. Road condition, river crossings and the exact vehicle matter; an SUV label is not permission to drive any highland route.

Check opening status on the official road-condition map and get the rental company’s written confirmation for the route. If an outing requires a vehicle or experience you do not have, compare a guided trip while keeping a simpler rental for the rest of the holiday.

For winter, discuss the route, tyres and equipment with the supplier and check current weather guidance. Four-wheel drive does not remove the need to postpone a journey. Choose a plan you can shorten without racing to the next hotel.

The first and last driving days need breathing room

Check the official road map and weather alerts before departure, not only when booking. An open road is not a guarantee that the conditions suit your experience or vehicle. Have an alternative overnight or a shorter day in mind.

Keep the final night and airport drive realistic. A saving on accommodation far from KEF can lose its value if the plan depends on a long early-morning journey with no allowance for changing conditions. Confirm your return procedure and the nearest suitable refuelling or charging plan with the supplier.

During the trip, use designated places to stop and secure loose items before opening the car in strong wind. Do not make a roadside photo stop where it obstructs traffic. Understand damage protection before adding extras

Write down the security deposit, damage excess and protection included in the selected rental. Then ask which situations are excluded, particularly if your route involves gravel or exposed conditions. Do not assume a product called “full” makes every type of damage covered.

Compare the whole Iceland rental budget

Use the same dates, collection times, drivers and route in each quote. Add selected protection, extra drivers, child seats, expected fuel or charging, accommodation parking and any one-way fees. For longer routes, check the mileage allowance and the cost of exceeding it.

An electric rental deserves a charging plan linked to your actual overnight stops and season. Establish charging access, payment arrangements and the required return level. Compare that with a petrol or diesel option using your expected route, rather than comparing only the rental price.

Keep the refundable deposit outside the trip-spending total while ensuring you can meet it with the accepted card in the main driver’s name. Inspect cancellation and late-return terms too: flexibility can matter when the route is weather-dependent.
