Quick verdict

Up Bank is my main Italy travel card pick for Australians. It is simple, app-first and charges 0% Up international transaction fees. Pair it with Wise as the backup, then use YouTrip, Revolut or ubank only if they fill a real gap in your setup.

Best travel card for Italy

For most Australians, I would use Up Bank as the main card in Italy and keep Wise as the backup. Italy is card-friendly in cities and on trains, but cash still matters for small cafes, markets, buses, tips, rural towns and the odd terminal that refuses to behave.

The goal is not to carry every card in Australia. The goal is one strong main card, one real backup, a little EUR cash and no dynamic currency conversion.

ATMs and cash in Italy

Italy is not cash-only, but cash still makes travel smoother. Keep a small amount of EUR for market stalls, local buses, small bars, beach towns, rural stops, tips and accommodation quirks.

ATM operator fees are separate from your card provider’s fees. A card can be excellent and the machine can still charge its own fee. Use bank ATMs where possible and read every screen before accepting.

Avoid dynamic currency conversion

If a terminal or ATM asks whether you want to pay in AUD or EUR, choose EUR. The AUD option usually lets the merchant or ATM provider set the exchange rate, which is usually worse.

The Italy rule is simple: pay in euros. Let your card provider handle the conversion.

Rental cars, tolls and petrol holds

If you are renting a car in Italy, your card setup matters more. Rental desks may require a card in the main driver’s name, and petrol stations or hotels can place temporary holds. Keep enough spare balance on your main and backup cards.

Read my Italy car rental guide before booking. Trains are better between major cities, but a car can be brilliant for Tuscany, Sicily, Sardinia, Puglia, the Dolomites and rural stays.

The setup I would use

  1. Open Up Bank and test the physical card before departure.
  2. Open Wise as the backup and add it to Apple Pay or Google Wallet.
  3. Carry one physical card in your wallet and store one separately.
  4. Withdraw a small amount of EUR after arrival if you need cash.
  5. Always choose EUR at terminals and ATMs.

If you are travelling beyond Italy, read the Europe travel card guide so your setup works across the whole route.

Which should you choose?

Choose Up Bank as your main Italy travel card if you want the simplest Australian setup. Add Wise as the backup because it is transparent, useful for transfers and handy when you want another card in your pocket.

Use YouTrip or Revolut as extra cards if you already like them. Add ubank if you want a Visa debit backup and can use referral code AFWLLL7 under the current offer terms.

Final setup

Build your Italy travel card stack

Start with Up Bank, add Wise, and keep a little EUR cash for smaller purchases.
