Terminal desk or shuttle: compare the actual handover

Use Faro Airport (FAO) as the pickup location when that is where you land. The airport’s rental directory lists its operators, but the instructions attached to your booking determine where you collect the car. An airport search result is not a promise that every vehicle waits outside arrivals.

For each shortlist, write down the desk or meeting point, whether a shuttle is involved, and what happens if your flight arrives late. A lower quote can still work well with an off-airport office; the important comparison is the total saving against the extra handover time. With children, large bags or a late landing, that trade-off matters more.

Enter a realistic collection time after landing and include your flight number where requested. Check the out-of-hours fee and the supplier’s delay procedure. Save the contact number before flying so you can reach the office if baggage collection runs late.

For return, save the rental return address rather than the departures drop-off. Allow time for refuelling or charging, inspection and any transfer back to the terminal. A key box does not automatically mean a shuttle runs at your departure time.

Choose an Algarve base before choosing hire dates

For planning purposes, group your driving into western, central and eastern outings. Lagos and Sagres sit in a different part of the region from Tavira. Repeatedly crossing between them can use more of your holiday than moving accommodation once or trimming the day-trip list.

West-focused trip: compare a Lagos-area base with driving back from a central resort after each outing. Central coast: group nearby beach and cliff stops into the same day. East-focused stay: price the journeys from your actual Tavira-area accommodation rather than assuming every excursion begins in Faro.

A practical five-night example is two town or beach days without driving, followed by three days with a rental. That is a planning pattern, not a claim that three days is always cheaper: local collection charges, transfers and minimum rental pricing can reverse the result. Run both quotes.

A22 tolls: the old advice has changed

The A22 Algarve motorway is now toll-free. Portugal’s consolidated toll-removal law lists the A22 and took effect on 1 January 2025. An older guide telling every Algarve visitor to budget A22 tolls is out of date.

This does not make every Portuguese motorway free. If you drive beyond the Algarve, check the roads on that route. Ask the rental company to separate any toll-device rental or administration charge from actual road tolls, and explain whether the device is optional under your contract. Do not assume a supplier fee disappears simply because one motorway has no toll.

Small car, automatic or a larger boot?

A compact car is worth considering for two travellers with modest luggage, particularly when the accommodation has a tight parking entrance. Before choosing the smallest category, count the bags you need to hide in the boot during a stop between hotels. A car photograph is not a luggage guarantee.

If you want an automatic, filter for it explicitly and check the booked category. Do not rely on the model pictured in an “or similar” offer. Compare the total premium against the value of a transmission you handle confidently.

For an electric rental, establish where you will charge overnight and the required return charge. Treat charging as a planned stop, not something to discover when returning to FAO. For a petrol or diesel rental, check the fuel policy and keep the final fuel receipt.

Compare seven rental days with only the days you need

Build two totals: whole-stay rental + parking + fuel + extras, and airport transfers + shorter rental + its parking, fuel and extras. Use identical driver details and vehicle needs in both searches.

As an arithmetic example only, if a whole-stay option totals €260 and transfers plus a shorter hire total €230, the shorter option saves €30. These are invented comparison figures, not current Faro prices. Decide whether that saving is worth the additional collection trip.

Keep the refundable security deposit outside that spending total, but check the card type, main-driver name and available funds required to collect the vehicle. Also compare damage excess, exclusions and how a claim is handled. A lower advertised excess and a reimbursement product are different arrangements.
