For city collection, check the exact branch address and its opening hours. “Dubrovnik” is not a promise of pickup at your hotel. If collecting after several city days, compare the cost and time of reaching that branch with returning to an airport supplier.

The traffic zone is a booking consideration

Dubrovnik has a special traffic regime covering parts of the historic area and surrounding buffer zone. The city’s current instructions describe passes linked to specified registration plates. A route displayed by a navigation app is not evidence that you have vehicle access.

Before driving towards accommodation in or near the controlled area, ask the property to confirm the lawful approach, parking location and any registration or approval needed for your rental. Recheck the actual plate once you collect the car. Do not interpret a room booking or a general parking recommendation as permission to enter.

Use the city’s published instructions and portal for the current process. If the arrangements are unclear, choose an agreed parking and transfer plan outside the controlled route rather than discovering the problem at the entry point.

For a day around Cavtat or the Konavle area, plan the parking and your main stops first. For a longer coastal route, compare returning in another Croatian city with a loop back to Dubrovnik. Use the actual return location in the quote.

If Montenegro or Bosnia and Herzegovina is on the itinerary, ask whether the chosen vehicle may enter each country, what documentation is required and which fees apply. Get the permission recorded before travelling. An international brand name or an “unlimited mileage” label does not establish cross-border permission.

Check the exact route your navigation proposes as well as the intended destination. If you wish to remain in Croatia on a northbound journey, make sure the route matches that intention. Leave time for any border formalities on routes where you do cross.

Parking and accommodation should be compared together

Ask whether the quoted room includes an allocated space, paid access to a nearby car park or merely information about public parking. Save the car-park entrance pin rather than only the accommodation pin.

If the final walk has steps or is inconvenient with luggage, plan how you will move your bags before arriving. For a split city-and-road trip, leaving the car out of the city portion may simplify both the cost and the arrival logistics.

Ferries and islands: another separate permission check

If taking the car on a ferry forms part of the route, confirm the supplier allows the journey and check the relevant rental conditions. A passenger ticket and a vehicle reservation are different purchases. Compare leaving the car on the mainland for an island day when that fits your plans.

At return, allow time for the supplier inspection and any airport transfer. Keep your fuel receipt and return acknowledgement. For an early flight, confirm the first available return arrangement before choosing a supplier solely on price.

Compare the whole booking cost

Use the same dates, times, currency and driver details for every quote. Add the rental, selected protection, any extra driver or child seat, expected fuel, parking and location fees. Keep a refundable deposit separate from the trip cost, while checking that the required funds are available.
