Search the Madeira Airport location, FNC, and open the collection instructions for each shortlisted supplier. Check whether the handover is at a desk, a meeting point or an office reached by shuttle. Use the voucher’s instructions for your flight and arrival time.

Before departure, ask your accommodation for the recommended vehicle approach and parking entrance. A pin at the front door may send you towards an awkward lane rather than the usable car park. Save both the supplier’s return location and the route back to the terminal.

Automatic or manual on Madeira’s hills?

Choose a transmission you handle confidently on hills. An automatic can reduce the workload for a driver unfamiliar with steep starts, but it does not remove the need to control speed on descents. Check that automatic is actually specified in the offer rather than inferred from the example photograph.

Visit Madeira describes narrow, winding roads and advises using lower gears on descents. It also warns that navigation can suggest impractical or steep roads. Prefer the recommended main-road approach when your accommodation gives you one, and review unfamiliar shortcuts before committing to them.

Choose enough luggage space without automatically selecting the largest vehicle. A category that feels comfortable on a motorway may be less convenient in a tight parking space. Ask the supplier about a suitable vehicle for the exact route and passenger load you are planning.

Parking details that change the cost

The tourism board says white spaces marked “M” are reserved for residents and advises checking signs for paid versus free parking. Do not assume a white-marked bay is available to visitors. Check the property’s parking arrangement before treating it as included.

For Funchal sightseeing, compare leaving the car at your accommodation with using a public car park and walking. For a trail day, check the official trail page for current access conditions and plan around the actual start and finish. A linear walk may require a separate return transfer even when you have a rental.

Plan driving days by part of the island

A useful planning approach is to separate west- and north-coast driving from an eastern outing, keeping mountain stops flexible for conditions. Avoid adding a distant viewpoint simply because it appears close on a small island map.

Compare an all-island base with a split stay if it substantially reduces repeated driving. For each option, count the nights of parking, the luggage-transfer day and the final journey to the airport. The cheapest accommodation plus the cheapest car is not automatically the cheapest combined trip.

If your route includes Porto Santo, check the passenger and vehicle arrangements separately. An island rental should not be assumed to include permission for a ferry journey.

Compare the whole booking cost

Use the same dates, times, currency and driver details for every quote. Add the rental, selected protection, any extra driver or child seat, expected fuel, parking and location fees. Keep a refundable deposit separate from the trip cost, while checking that the required funds are available.
