Quick verdict

Up Bank is my main travel card pick for Portugal. It has 0% Up international transaction fees and a simple app. Pair it with Wise as a backup for transparent conversion and ATM use, then consider YouTrip or Revolut if you already like those apps.

Best travel card for Portugal

For most Australians, I would use Up Bank as the main card in Portugal and keep Wise as the backup. Portugal is card-friendly in many places, but cash is still useful for smaller towns, markets, tips, laundromats, local cafes and the occasional stubborn terminal.

The goal is not to carry every fintech card in Australia. The goal is to have one clean main card, one genuinely useful backup and a little EUR cash.

Up: offer and account conditions

Up: ordinary Savers earn 5.35% p.a. Grow when untouched, up to the combined $250,000 individual Grow cap, or 2.00% p.a. Flow when accessed. First make five qualifying debit-card purchases in the calendar month; otherwise ordinary Savers earn 0.00%. The 2Up Grow cap is separate. Essentials earns 2.00% Flow without the purchase requirement until 28 February 2027. Up rates and conditions.

Up travel: no Up international transaction or ATM-withdrawal fee; ATM operators can charge separately. The card uses Mastercard’s exchange rate. Daily withdrawal limits still apply: the standard ATM cash-out limit is $1,000, subject to approved variations. Up currently advises allowing 15–20 business days for a physical card. Deposit protection: eligible Up deposits share Bendigo and Adelaide Bank’s $250,000-per-person FCS limit; Ubank deposits share NAB’s limit. These are limits per person per institution, not per account. Rates are variable. Account eligibility and identity checks apply.

Travel card and euro cash setup in Portugal

ATMs and cash in Portugal

Portugal is not a cash-only destination, but cash still helps. Withdraw from bank ATMs where possible, avoid sketchy standalone machines in tourist zones and always read the screen before confirming.

ATM operator fees are separate from your card provider’s fees. Up, Wise, YouTrip or Revolut can have good card-side fees and you can still be charged by the machine owner.

Avoid dynamic currency conversion

If a card terminal or ATM asks whether you want to pay in AUD or EUR, choose EUR. The AUD option usually gives the merchant or ATM provider control over the exchange rate. It feels helpful. It is usually expensive.

The rule is simple: in Portugal, pay in euros. Let your card provider handle the conversion.

The setup I would use

  1. Open Up Bank and test the card before departure.
  2. Open Wise as the backup and add it to Apple Pay or Google Wallet.
  3. Carry one physical card in your wallet and store one backup separately.
  4. Withdraw a small amount of EUR after arrival if you need cash.
  5. Always choose EUR at terminals and ATMs.

If you are also visiting other European countries, read the Europe travel card guide and make sure your card stack works across the whole trip.

Which should you choose?

Choose Up Bank as your main Portugal travel card if you want the simplest Australian setup. Add Wise as the backup because it is transparent, useful for transfers and handy when you want another card network in your pocket.

Use YouTrip or Revolut as extra cards if you already like them, but do not make the setup so complicated that you stop tracking your money.
