Quick verdict

Saily is the winner for most travellers going to Italy. It has the cleanest setup, sensible short-trip pricing and enough plan sizes for normal maps, messaging and booking use. Use Saily for Italy first, then compare Airalo and Yesim if you want a second price check.

Best eSIM for Italy: my winner

If I were landing in Italy and wanted data working immediately, I would start with Saily. It is the least fussy option: buy the plan, install it on Wi-Fi before you fly, then switch it on when you arrive.

Airalo is the obvious backup because many travellers already use it. Yesim is worth checking when you want a larger bundle, daily plan or another live price comparison.

For most trips, I would choose the cheapest plan that covers your real data use instead of buying the biggest plan out of panic. Maps, messaging, transport apps and bookings do not need huge data. Video, hotspot use and remote work do.

Coverage notes for Italy

Coverage depends on the local partner network, your phone, congestion and terrain. A plan can work beautifully in the main cities and still be patchy in mountains, rural roads, islands or national parks.

That is not a reason to avoid eSIMs. It is a reason to download offline maps, save accommodation details and avoid treating mobile data as a guaranteed safety net in remote areas.

Buy an eSIM if…

You want easy data for maps, WhatsApp, bookings, ride-hailing and banking apps without hunting for a SIM shop after landing.

Consider a local SIM if…

You are staying a month or more, need a local phone number, or expect heavy hotspot/video use every day.

How to set it up without drama

  1. Check your phone is unlocked and eSIM-compatible.
  2. Buy the plan while you still have reliable Wi-Fi.
  3. Install the eSIM before departure and label it clearly.
  4. Keep your normal SIM active for bank SMS codes if needed.
  5. After arrival, select the eSIM for mobile data and enable roaming for that eSIM line.

Do not delete the eSIM while troubleshooting unless the provider tells you to. Restart first, check APN instructions, confirm data roaming is enabled and try manual network selection if the app lists supported networks.

eSIM vs local SIM in Italy

A local SIM can be cheaper for huge data or long stays, but it costs time: finding a shop, showing ID where required, comparing plans, swapping SIMs and keeping your home SIM safe. For a short trip, I would rather pay a little extra for a clean eSIM setup and start moving.

If you are crossing borders, compare a regional plan as well. A single regional eSIM can beat buying separate country plans if every destination on your route is included.

Which should you choose?

Start with Saily if you want the best overall Italy eSIM. It is the easiest recommendation for most travellers because the setup is simple and the plan range is clear.

Choose Airalo if you already use the app or it has a better live plan for your data size. Check Yesim if you want another price comparison before buying.

FAQ

Do travel eSIMs include calls and SMS?

Usually no. Most are data-only, so use WhatsApp, iMessage, Messenger, FaceTime Audio or similar apps.

When should I install it?

Install it before departure on reliable Wi-Fi, then activate mobile data after you arrive unless the provider gives different instructions.

How much data do I need?

For a normal one-to-two-week trip, 5GB to 10GB is a comfortable starting point. Buy more if you hotspot, upload video or work remotely.
